Thankful on Thursday

Our Life Group played a game recently during which we had to quickly name things for which we are thankful. When one of my turns came, I said, "Blood."

A few people laughed at me and said, "Blood?!"

Okay, then "the blood." When referring to the blood of Christ, they accepted my answer. However, why not be grateful for blood? Blood is important to our bodies. Blood has:
  • red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body
  • white blood cells, which fight infections
  • platelets, which are cells that help you stop bleeding if you get a cut
  • plasma, a yellowish liquid that carries nutrients, hormones, and proteins throughout the body
That is certainly something for which to be thankful in my book!

I am also thankful for drapes. Yes, drapes, not curtains. Yes, there is a difference. No, I am not a decorating fanatic. Drapes are functional. Honest, they are!

I do not get as much sleep as I would like at night. I can rarely sleep with daylight, and we have a lot of windows. If we were not able to close the drapes and darken our bedroom, I may not sleep much at all.

Also, I am grateful for oil. I know that these days, with the oil spill, and the damage happening with that, people are calling for boycotts and are committing to avoiding a certain company. However, this horrible accident withstanding, we depend on oil. I am not talking about the fact that it fuels our vehicles so that we can get from point A to point B and do what we need to do to live our lives. In fact, many people may not realize just how much we depend on oil.

Do you know those plastic hangers on which we hang our clothes? Made with oil. Do you know those clothes that you wear with the special wicking to try fast and help you stay cool? Made with oil. Do you know those disposable razors that you use to shave before you get dressed? Made with oil. Do you know those swing sets in which our children play? Made with oil. Do you know those photo albums where we put the photographs that we took of our children playing on swing sets? Made with oil. Do you know that mosquito spray that you put on your children after they have been playing outside on that swing set? Made with oil. Do you know that laptop on which people type to complain about a certain oil company? Made with oil.

Today I challenge you to take note of things for which you are thankful that you might not notice or consider every day. Appreciate the things that we may normally take for granted. Will you share with the rest of us three of those things? Maybe we can each see through one another's eyes to remember allof that with which we are blessed every day.

  1. I'm thankful for eyesight. I admire the way the leaves change color in the fall. I love how blue the sky can be in the winter as compared to the summer months. I'm thankful that I have a heart that can be broken and it has not harden because of betrayal or disappointments over the years. I'm thankful that I truly know who is in control of my life.

  2. I am thankful for the improvements made over the years in the medical industry. Yes, I know many people are bashing the medical industry, and at times I do too, but when I sit back and really think about how far the medical industry has come over the last 20, 30, even 50 years, I am thankful for where we are today as opposed to back then. The reason I am so thankful? I am thankful that we have medical devices for diabetics like the blood glucose meters, test strips for those meters, insulin pump therapy, the list truely goes on. As you may know, my son is type 1 diabetic. Since his diagnosis, I have talked to SEVERAL other people who have children, as well as ppl that have family with diabetes. On almost a daily basis, I hear that someones grandfather or grandmother had diabetes way back before the blood glucose meters were ever around! It amazes me how back then, diabetes was manageable and they were able to live relatively healthy lives with this disease WITHOUT the medical advances we have today! That is ONE thing I am thankful for.

I am also thankful for farmers. Yes, farmers! Farmers in our country (and yes, even overseas) are truely what keep our country going. Think about it! Without farmers growing massive amounts of crops, the starvation rate in our country would be so much higher! There would be a LOT more people going hungry. Not everyone has a green thumb and can grow their own crops LOL. I know I am just learning to find (or see if I have LOL) my green thumb!

I am also VERY thankful for all the people that risk their lives to save others. I am talking about our soldiers, firefighters, police officers, etc. Did you know that there are a lot more VOLUNTEER firefighters than there are PAID firefighters? It takes a special type of person to put YOUR life before their own, whether its to protect our freedom, enforce the laws, or save your house and family. It takes a special person to do these things. I don't think I could.. could you?

Finally (yes, I know this is number 4 lol, and I know this prolly could be combined with my number 3 but felt the need to keep them seperate) I am thankful for the ambulance personelle. I broke my back about 6 years ago. If it weren't for the amublance personelle rushing me to the hospital, who knows how long it would have taken me to get there, get the immediate care I needed, get the x-rays I needed, the diagnosis, the treatment, the advice, etc. While, my injury didn't leave me paralyzed or anything,it was still comforting to know that in an emergency, someone was there to pick me up and get me to the care I needed. Now, with my son and his diabetes, it is even more of a comfort to me knowing that people like them are out there, ready to rush to his aide if needed. I don't drive. I don't have a drivers license. I don't have a second car. So, heaven forbid, if anything should ever happen to my son while my husband is at work, if he should ever pass out from too low blood sugar, or go into a seizure, or any of the other scares that can happen with diabetes, I know that the ambulance station is only 3 blocks down the road and can get here, get him, and get him to the ER a HECK of a lot faster than I could. Without them, if something were to happen, I would have to call my husband at work, wait 20-30minutes for him to drive home, try to load my son and my daughter into the car, and drive another 20-30 minutes to the nearest ER. That is a LOT of time wasted and can be potentially harmful or fatal for my son. So yes, I am extremely thankful for our Ambulance services.

  3. I am thankful for my family, food, and shelter. I know these are so basic, but in other parts of the world, these basics are hard to come by. I am so blessed to live in the states and have my needs met so easily and fully.

  4. These are fabulous responses!

Musiciangcr, you are so right about the blue sky being different in the summer than in the winter.

Dawn, not having a driver's license amazes me. I have an old friend who is now forty-four and has never had a license. That dumbfounds me.

Howellmonkey, you are so right that sometimes we miss the basics of life because we take them for granted.

God is SO good to us!
