Hiccups

Do you know how long hiccups last?

One fifth of a second.

That is it.

Think about that. If you have ever had the hiccups, then you know how it feels like they go on and on for the longest time. Really, though, they take up such an insignificant part of your time.

Do you ever have "hiccups" during your day? These "hiccups" can be negative thoughts, feelings of discouragement, loneliness, feelings of failure, or something else. Mind you, they are only hiccups, and they can only consume your day if you let them.

Here is an illustration of how insignificant hiccups can be: I heard a story of a man who actually had the hiccups for twenty-one days! Even over twenty-one days, at one fifth of a second each, he only actually had the hiccups for a total of about four minutes.

When you experience "hiccups" in your daily life, how do you handle them? Do you let them consume you, bring you down, eat away at your spirit? Do you let them become the thing that ruins your whole day?

...or do you treat them as just what they are? Hiccups. Momentary glitches in your normally positive, happy, uplifting self. Do you shake off those "hiccups" and put a smile back on your face?

Those little things in life that have the chance of bringing you down, that have the chance of making you unhappy, that have the chance of having any negative impact on you, can only have that negative impact if you choose to let them.

YOU have the choice. You can let the little "hiccups" in life get to you, or you can simply say, "Excuse me," and move on with a positive attitude.

What is your choice?

  1. Hi Dawnmarie!
At long last, we have arrived in each others lives! I like you, I like your great attitude with a question mark behind it that says how do you handle those hiccups? Like you, I make a choice to be happy each morning. Then your feet hit the floor and the days are full of various hiccup attacks. I pray my way through them. I talk to myself (no kiddin) out loud and say...God you go before me...I'm counting these troubles joy. I try so hard not to have a sharp biting tongue and I try to let the positive spill out of my heart.
I hope you come back to my blog time and time again. I have a give away every month. This month it is called Groovy Girls. I think you'll fit right in.

  2. I have hiccups all the time! It actually helps me to be positive. These "hiccups" make me more thankful for everything around me. My home, hubby, monsters, loving friends and family. " Rejoice in the Lord always. I will sat it again: Rejoice! ... Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God..And the peace of God...will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus. " Philippians 4:4-9

  3. I know this is off subject (RABBIT TRAIL!!!) but Charles Osborne of Anthon, IA, began hiccupping in 1922 when he was slaughtering a hog, and hiccupped every 1 1/2 seconds until February 1990. (Guinness Book 1998 edition) Could you stay positive with that???

  4. I definitely needed to read this today (12 days late) as I had a definite hiccup this morning. :) Thank you for reminding me that it's not the end of the world ... or my day. Just have to let it go and move on. :)
